Pasture and Forage Research Division
The Pasture and Forage Research Division in the college of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry, Mathura was established on 19th Feb. 1964 with the objective of development and propagation of high yielding nutrious fodder, fodder varieties suitable for livestock production and also to multiply and distribute promising varieties of fodder seeds to farmers. It is also engaged in developing better techniques for conservation of forage and proceesing of poor quality roughages.
India is a country where per capita holding in very small and has to sustain the heavy burden of fast increase in humen and cattle population. In major part of U.P. our cultivators have been following the traditional pattern of one double cropping and the out turn of food material per unit of land is hardly sufficient to meet the needs of human beings and livestock conjointly. In view of the acute shortage of food grains which are selling at a very exhorbitant cost. It becomes difficult for the livestock owners to incorporate them in the dietry of animals. Keeping the above facts in view an elaborate scheme of fodder development in this state is of paramount importance. As U.P. is a very big state having multi type of agroclimatic and soil conditions which ranges from high attitudes of Himalayas to dry low ranges of Vindhyachal an one side and shallow area of Bundelkhand on other side. Under such variable conditions of U.P. a systematic study of local features of different areas is of vital importance for suggesting a pasture forage development scheme. However, drugstore the choice of grasses, legumes, fodder & fuel trees for different agroclimatic conditions of U.P.
The primary aim of this division has been to search out high yielding nutritious fodder varieties which may also help in maintenance of soil fertility and to improve the production of green forage which are more palatable and provide the nutrients in natural as well as act as laxative. Green fodder is very economical in India where grains and concentrate are very costly and short supply.
