Dr. Abhijit Mitra

Vice Chancellor, DUVASU, Mathura, U.P.

Dr. Abhijit Mitra is a veterinarian, scientist, policy leader, and academic administrator with over three decades of professional experience. His work encompasses animal breeding, genetics, biotechnology, and livestock health policy, with significant contributions at both national and international levels.

Before assuming his current role as Vice Chancellor of DUVASU, Dr. Mitra served as the Animal Husbandry Commissioner at the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD), Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying (MoFAHD), Government of India, where he also held the position of India’s Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO). He was the Chairman of the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) and the Committee for Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CCSEA).

In these capacities, he steered the preparation of several key national policy documents, including national strategies on disease surveillance and vaccine development, Standard Veterinary Treatment Guideline (SVTG), minimum standards for veterinary institutions, the Poultry Disease Action Plan, framework guidelines for disease-free compartmentalization, SoPs for animal blood banks, and frameworks for One Health and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) mitigation. He also played a pivotal role in securing a highly competitive USD 25 million G20 Pandemic Fund for India’s pandemic preparedness.

Internationally, Dr. Mitra has represented India as the Chair of the FAO-APCHA, the Chair of the Regional Advisory Group on PPR eradication in SAARC countries, and as the national focal points with the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH). Under his leadership, India has strengthened its global voice in livestock health and biosecurity.

Earlier, as Director of ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Cattle, Meerut, and ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun, Nagaland, he advanced pioneering research in genetics, breed improvement, and reproductive biotechnology. Over more than two decades of teaching at ICAR-NDRI and ICAR-IVRI, he has guided numerous postgraduate students. Dr. Mitra has authored over 85 scientific publications, including journal articles, books, and book chapters, and has developed several patents and technologies.

Dr. Mitra is a Fellow of several leading academies, including the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (FNAAS) and the National Academy of Veterinary Sciences (FNAVS), and the recipient of multiple national awards for his contributions to research, policy, and animal welfare. Widely travelled internationally, he has been an active voice in global policy dialogues on animal health and livestock development

He continues to champion a sustainable, innovation-driven livestock sector that strengthens farmer livelihoods, promotes sustainable livestock systems, advances animal welfare, and addresses critical challenges including antimicrobial resistance, climate change, and food security.
