Department of Veterinary Public Health
Department was established in the year 1988 and postgraduate programme was introduced from the year 1993. Since then, 27 students have completed their MVSc and one student his PhD degree from this Department. Besides UG & PG teaching programmes, department has mainly focused on research on brucellosis as a result of which, the incidence of brucellosis in organized farms of UP has declined to 1-2%compared to 20-30% in the past years. The department is also involved in research work on assessment of microbial contamination (qualitative and quantitative) on water and foods of animal origin viz. milk, meat,fishand its products. Various pathogenic organisms have been isolated like Salmonella, E. coli, B. cereus and Clostridium. The important serovars isolated of Salmonella from foods are - S. typhimurium and gallinarum from poultry, S. heidelberg and S. typhimurium from fish and S. kissi from goats.
One research project is running on "Outreach programme on zoonotic diseases Verocyto Toxic E. coli" in co-ordination with IVRI, Izatnagar and funded by ICAR, New Delhi.
Department is actively involved in extension programmes of the University and veterinary public health related knowledge like zoonotic diseases, food safety and environmental hygiene etc to general public, farmers and livestock owners is disseminated through newspapers, kisan mela, popular articles, radio-talks etc
