Department of Veterinary Pathology
Since inception of the Department in the year 1948, and start of postgraduate programmes leading to award of MVSc and PhD degrees in the year 1956 and 1960, Department has made significant contributions.
Extensiveresearch work on various diseases of cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, pigs, laboratory animals and birds has been done. Some of the maladies were reported for the first time in the country; salient amongst them were the incidence of lymphosarcoma, ultimobranchial lymphoid tumors in buffaloes, acute theileriosis, thyroid dysfunction, asiacantamoeba in lungs of buffaloes, under developed and atrophied fallopian tube in poultry, quail enteritis, Marek's disease in poultry, CRD, avian respiratory chlamydiosis, transmission of maedi in host and experimental animals, nephroblastoma in a young calf, dropsy syndrome in buffaloes, sheep and poultry; antibacterial, immunomodulatory and wound healing properties of cow urine in rats, incidence of Johne's disease in three months old kids. Fowl cholera was studied in various species of birds like chicken, quails and turkey. For prophylaxis and control oil adjuvant vaccine with addition of Vitamin E against fowl cholera was prepared and found to be superior to commercially available vaccines. Four research projects on Jaagziekte and Maedi, Marek's disease and pneumonia sponsored by PL-480, ICAR and UP Government have been completed. The department was conferred the “Certificate of Appreciation” from USA for the excellent work on the Jaagziekte and Maedi.
Even today, department is the hub on the pulmonary diseases of domesticated animals and birds. Around one lac lungs have been pathomorphologically examined for Jaagziekte and Maedi, Chlamydial pneumonia, pulmonary mycoplasmosis, pulmonary mycosis and CRD. Some other areas where majorresearch work has been taken up by Department are argemone toxicity in birds, sheep and buffaloes. Toxicity of heavy metals like mercury, arsenic, and lead and their pathology and pathogenesis in domesticated and laboratory animals were studied.
Department has separate well equipped labs for haematology, clinicopathology, histochemistry, immunopathology and pathomorphology. Some of the major equipments are semiautomatic microtome, UV Spectrophotometer, digital microscope for capturing microscopic and gross images along with microphotographic equipments and embalming facilities for preservation of dead-bodies and and their organs of small animals and poultry have been developed.
