College of Fishery Science
This college is proposed to be established with following objectives and justifications.
Objective- The state of Uttar Pradesh has a vast potential for production of fishes as blessed by huge in land water resources. It requires a large number of skilled workers for fisheries development on the scientific norms. The human resources generated from the proposed college will also use biotechnological tools for rapid growth of the fishes and conversion rate of crude feed into nutritious fish food. The technologies thus generated will be transferred to the farmers involved in this trade by organizing gosthi, training courses and other extension activities. In this way the farmers will be motivated to undertake this farming which will cause upliftment of their socioeconomic status of the fisher folk and generation of employment to the masses. The perishable products need to be preserved and processed for longer use by developing newer technologies.
Justification- India is the major marine fish producer ranking 7th in the world and has vast potential for inland fisheries. In spite of this there is large gap to teem the mouth the growing population of the country. The Uttar Pradesh having no costal areas is thus deprived of the unlimited potential of ocean resources. The economy of the state is based on the produce of limited agricultural land. To meet out the challenging demand of food, other resources are to be explored. Fortunately, the state has vast water resources of flowing water and confined water. A great length of river and canals around 28,500 Km and man made, natural and rural ponds and lakes about 4.32 lakh Hectares are available to the state. The small reservoir of about 218651 Hectares produces only 14.60 Kg/ Hectare which is deplorably very low in the state. The per capita consumption of fishes is around 0.24Kg which is extremely low as compared to the target of well fed India by 2020 around 22.58 Kg/ annum. It appears that the fresh water aquaculture is neither developed and nor a common activity integrated with animal-agriculture farming system. The poor situation is due to lack of trained fisheries workers as there appears no full fledged fisheries college existing in the state to cater the demand of scientific fish farming.
Therefore, the existence of the proposed fisheries college in the state will utilize the available water resources for fisheries development and to generate employment, improvement of living standard and availability of nutritious food for the masses.
Impact-The commission of the college will have long lasting impact on the enhancement of fisheries as a result to achieve the target of well fed India by the year 2020. The available human resources will generate employment to the youth and entrust the campaign of grow more food .The farmers involved in this trade will be benefited by scientific advice to obtain more production which will definitely improve their socioeconomic status. This will achieve significant contribution to livelihood enhancement and impact on the attainment of improved management and production of inland fisheries resources of the state. The huge production of high class protein will readily be available to the masses and generate the revenue to the state by exporting the surplus fisheries products.
The proposed college shall have following teaching department to achieve the above mentioned objective.
- Department of Fishery Biology
- Department of Aquaculture
- Department of Fishery Hydrography
- Department of Fish Processing Technology & Microbiology
- Department of Fishery Engineering
- Department of Fishery Resources, Economics, Statistics & Extension Education
- Fisheries work experience
