Welcome to DUVASU, Mathura

Veterinary Microbiology

Department
of Veterinary Microbiology

Since establishment of the Department in 1950, Department has
been actively involved in imparting education to undergraduate
and postgraduate students.

Department has made significant scientific contributions and
several new species of bacteria were reported first time in
world; notable among them were Salmonella
mathura, Salmonella vrindavan, Salmonella brijbhumi,
Salmonella gokul and Salmonella goverdhan.
 Existence
of Mycoplasma as the causative agent of CRD in poultry, Candida
tropicalis, C parakruseii and C stellatoidea
 from
fowls, ILT and IB in poultry, Trichophyton
simi
 infection
in chickens, dog and man, Shigella serotypes from zoo animals
and birds, about two dozen serotypes of Salmonella from
different hosts, E. coli including OI-KI and O78-K80 from
coliseptieaemia in chicks, twenty Mycoplasma species from
various hosts including Mycoplasma pneumoarthritis from kids,
Listeria denitrificans from repeat breeder buffalo,
Streptococcus suis from swine have been isolated and reported
first time in India. Serological evidence of bovine
immunodeficiency virus, a conformational epitope on gag antigen
in BIV, development of recombinant antibodies against BIV using
phage display antibody technology and genotypic identification
of Mycobacterium avium sub-species Paratuberculosis as 'Bison
type' from juvenile Capri tuberculosis are the other highlights
and first reports from India.

Apart from teaching and academic research, Department has
handled nine research projects funded by different funding
agencies including DST, AICRP, ICAR, NATP etc. Last in the list
was, Niche Area of Excellence project on “Production
Augmentation in Rural Livestock through Health Intervention”.
Department has organized six training programmes and two summer
Institutes. More than forty Students from other Universities in
the subjects of Biotechnology, Microbiology and
Biochemistry have also taken trainings of different
durations from time to time.

Department has excellent facilities for studying the detection
of cytokines and their confirmation by m-RNA expression. Up and
down regulation of cytokines by certain common Indigenous plants
has been studied in the Department. Keeping in view the
expertise of this Department and to disseminate the practical
skill, training programme on “Cytokine Assay” was organized by
this Department.
