Department of Veterinary Epidemiology & Preventive Medicine
Department of Veterinary Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine was established in this College in the year 1991. Apart from routine teaching and research activities, Department serves as the “Apex Diagnostic Centre” with the state of the art laboratories for disease diagnosis and closely coordinates with State Animal Husbandry Department; and has made significant contributions in diagnosis and control of different infectious and contagious diseases. Department has the distinction of having been bestowed with Jawahar Lal Nehru Award for the research work conducted by one of the PhD students of this Department in 1999.
Department is also the regional centre of All India Coordinated Research Project on epidemio-logical studies on foot and mouth disease and also taking up research work on impact of vaccination on the control of bovine brucellosis, molecular epidemiology of Mycoplasm bovis and infectious Bovine rhinotrachietis in ruminants.
Recently, ICAR has awarded “Centre of Excellence in Niche Area” project for research on rural livestock production augmentation through disease monitoring and health interventions”. In addition, another research project entitled “Molecular epidemiology of the infectious bovine rhinotrachietis (IBR) virus and development of quick diagnostic tool in ruminants” funded by UPCAR, Lucknow is going on in the Department for developing a quick and reliable test like PCR/ELISA for early detection of IBR disease in livestock. I.C.A.R funded another research project on Mycoplasmosis “molecular epidemiology of Mycoplasm bovis in ruminants” is also underway. While conducting disease investigation and surveillance work on different diseases of livestock at field level, farmers and livestock owners are made aware about the economic impact of livestock diseases and how they can keep their livestock healthy and productive. Besides, close interaction with livestock farming community is also maintained to provide information through banners and posters, Kisaan fairs, Goshthies and radio broadcasting.
